On Wednesday 1st July, a week after the Alumni Reunion Party was the SISBAA Annual Sports Tournament consisting of Football and Basketball events. This was a chance for alumni athletes to go head to head against staff and students in the hotly contested and eagerly awaited tournament. Everybody seemed really up for the challenge this year despite the atrocious Bangkok heat and humidity.
On the courts, a Year 13 boys team completed the card against three alumni men’s teams whilst the Year 13 girls team, “Gena Shoots” went head to head against an alumni squad featuring players from several graduating classes. There was some fine quality on display leading to the Class of 2014 team and the alumni girls team winning the Basketball trophies respectively.
On the football fields, there was a nice turnout of both players and a fairly decent crowd with Jinji on the microphone adding to the atmosphere. There were 9 teams competing for the trophy previously held by Big Croc the past three years. There were teams from Year 13 “C Cup”, 12 and 11 “Soccer Spirits”, plus two staff teams and alumni teams from the class of 2014 “Kickball”, 2013, 2009 “Beer Belly” and class of 2012 defending champions “Big Croc”.
Despite a series of close matches throughout the afternoon, luck did not go the way of the alumni with Big Croc losing out on a place in the final to an extremely talented Year 13 side “C Cup” setting up an intriguing final against the staff team who qualified in a close encounter virtue of a golden goal in their semi final match. The final was a close, intense affair with experience winning over youth in the end sealing a tournament victory for the teachers who lifted the trophy.
